Derek was a marketing strategist and advertising account executive for over 20 years—a rewarding but stressful career, which led to burnout and a need for change. His old high school buddy, Robert Chew, was a master carpenter, ready to strike out on his own. Derek had carpentry experience as a Habitat for Humanity volunteer during college, and assisted a few friends with building their houses. So Robert and Derek met for dinner one night and decided to form a small carpentry business, and a few weeks later had their first project together: a full basement renovation. It was an extremely satisfying experience, remodeling a few rooms the client had rarely used, into a warm, inviting space that became their primary relaxation and entertainment center. In the process, Derek got hooked on the construction business.
With his extensive account management experience, Derek excels at customer service and truly enjoys interacting with clients. His sales tenure taught him to ask lots of questions, but more importantly, to listen to the desires of the client.
In addition to doing carpentry, Derek DeBank handles all aspects of marketing, branding, business development, sales, and operations for Old Raleigh Carpentry, LLC.
Derek is a Raleigh native who grew up in Coley Forest and now lives in the Bishop’s Park neighborhood. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Guilford College.
When not doing carpentry, Derek can be found dipping a fishing hook in a nearby pond, hunting waterfowl, hiking a mountain trail, or reading something at a coffee shop. He volunteers with some local non-profit organizations, and served 4 years on the Guilford College Alumni Board of Directors.
